Rescuers of Donetsk region took part in a three-day press tour "Principles and procedures of humanitarian demining in Ukraine"

A press tour "Principles and Procedures for Humanitarian Demining in Ukraine" organized by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine was held in Kramatorsk and Slovyansk on August 18-20. The event allowed journalists and bloggers to get acquainted with the principles and procedures of humanitarian demining on the examples of territories damaged by the armed conflict, to communicate with Ukrainian and international experts in the field of mine action, to raise awareness of best international practices and local initiatives, to see practical work aimed at reduction of risks to people from explosive objects. The press tour was attended by 12 media representatives. In addition, the event was attended by representatives of the Main Department of the SES of Ukraine in Donetsk region, who demonstrated a set of awareness activities for the population regarding the danger of explosive objects, used throughout the region.

During these three days, the participants of the press tour received information about the essence of mine action, its history, standards, major players in the world and in Ukraine. Government and non-governmental organizations presented their work and results achieved in conducting surveys and clearing dangerous areas, quality control mechanisms, documenting operations and returning already safe land to communities. Media representatives could also learn first-hand about the specifics and challenges of humanitarian demining in Ukraine, work on informing people about the risks and the system of assistance to victims; media ethics issues were also in focus.

The participants of the press tour visited the offices of mine action operators, as well as areas where humanitarian demining is being carried out. Participants had the opportunity to do the interviews with international and national experts, get expert advice and advice from colleagues on the preparation of materials on this topic.

The press tour was organized within the framework of the "Mine Action Capacity Building Project of Ukraine" , implemented by the OSCE Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine with the financial support of the Ministry of International Affairs of Canada, the Governments of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Kingdom of Norway, Slovakia, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the US Mission in the OSCE.
