The State Emergency Service is continuing measures to eliminate the effects of forest fires in the Zhytomyr oblast and the Exclusion Zone. This was stated by Volodymyr Demchuk, Director of the Emergency Response Department, at the briefing on April 18.
“As of this morning, April 18, in the Exclusion Zone, the main efforts of the Service are to locate four centers of smoldering hemp, wood residue and one peat bog. At all sites the situation is stable, only near the village of Buda there is a slight spread of burning of forest floor in areas not accessible for extinguishing by ground forces. Currently, all necessary measures are being taken to stop this spread”, the speaker said.

He added that the installation of fire breaks in order to prevent the fire to other forests, in addition to heavy engineering equipment SESU was involved heavy engineering vehicle of Armed Forces of Ukraine.

“There is currently no threat to the Shelter facility, radiation storage facility, etc. The radiation background in the city of Kyiv and Kyiv oblast is within the normal range”, he stressed.

Concerning the situation in the Zhytomyr region: On April 17, there were 15 fires in the territory of four forests. As of the morning of April 18, there remain 9 combustion centers, 5 of which are localized, and 4 small cells continue to extinguish grass and forest floor. “The fire aviation of the SESU and heavy engineering equipment of the Armed Forces operates. In case of complication of the situation, the formed reserve of forces will be immediately involved, ”Volodymyr Demchuk said.

Anatoliy Prokopenko, Deputy Director of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, commented on the situation with air pollution in Kyiv.
“As of April 17 and 18, the atmospheric air quality in the capital is estimated as the following: suspended substances (dust and combustion residues) exceed the maximum permissible concentration by 2-4 times, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and formaldehyde exceed the maximum permissible values in 2-3 times. At the same time, carbon monoxide is below the MPC, ”he said.

Anatoly Prokopenko noted that such indicators are characteristic of the spring period, except for suspended matter, and are estimated as not critical to the population.

“The highest levels of atmospheric pollution are usually observed in the night and especially early hours. Therefore, you should restrict your stay outside and not open the windows at this time. These pollutants observed in the city of Kyiv are the result of the movement of air masses from the territory of Zhytomyr oblast. In the coming days, the northwest wind will continue. Already on April 20-22 the wind will change the direction to the north and these days the impact on the pollution in Kiev is expected to decrease, ”he summed up.

Anatoliy Prokopenko also stressed that air pollution in the capital is not related to fires in the Exclusion Zone.
